I started to use the internet in mid 2000s and my usage was limited to an hour or so per day. I was using it:

  • To make a research about a specific topic for my homework etc.
  • To talk with relatives abroad over MSN (with video quality 5 fps and 144p).
  • To discuss with people in the forums.
  • To find a music album/movie/series and wait for it to be downloaded and listen/watch them offline.
  • To learn a new skill from a training set Photoshop, Powerpoint, Video editing etc. (These were mostly included in the CDs given by the tech magazines.)

I remember internet was called to be very beneficial on those days.

But in today’s world, we try to be stay away from it as much as possible by using Apple’s ScreenTime like applications to track our usage time and limit it. We started to read about how to get focused into a particular thing more than ever. Even most people stopped watching football that it is very time consuming or they are scrolling something while watching it. As a result we started to call it a bad habit, right?

So what changed? It was considered a beneficial thing and it is a bad habit now?!

I am asking this question to myself for a while as the new year is coming we would like to set some habits/goals that we will forget about in a month or so? I got tired of it and for this year I decided to leave some habits instead of setting new ones. The most annoying habit I have is the same with most of the people: Doomscrolling.

Doomscrolling changed the way we use internet, before we had a context in our minds while using the internet, now there are social media algorithms, so we don’t have anything in mind, we just consume anything aimlessly and context is switching very quickly that . So, I think there are two important words that changed the internet: No goal, aimless.

How to make the Internet Great again? (at least for yourself)
